The Influence of Social Media Usage on Political Attitudes Among Students of Atatürk University: An Analysis on Generation Y and Z
Abstract
With the development of digitalization and internet technologies, many aspects of our lives have been integrated into the virtual world. One of the most significant reflections of this is social media. Social media has not only transformed communication and information exchange but has also fundamentally altered individuals' daily routines. Nowadays, instead of traditional methods, we prefer to use social media to acquire information, discuss, and share opinions about current events and politics. The political attitudes of Generation Y, who quickly adapted to these developments, and Generation Z, who were born into this technology, are among the most intriguing topics during each election period. The aim of this study is to analyze the social media usage habits of Generation Y and Z at Atatürk University and their impact on political attitudes. In line with the study, a survey was conducted with 421 participants from Generation Y and Z at Atatürk University. A Chi-Square analysis was performed to examine their views on social media and politics. Accordingly, participants spend 3-4 hours on social media daily. Instagram is the most frequently used social media platform, while Twitter/X is the platform that influences them the most regarding political content. Social media is an important news source for both generations. Both generations are interested in politics and current events. While Generation Y follows oppositional content and posts, Generation Z indicated that they do not. For both generations, national values and ideology are seen as the most important factors when voting.
