Investigation of the effects of quartz and talc fillers on mechanical properties of engineered stones with different resin/filler ratios

Öz

In this study, mechanical properties of engineering stones were investigated using different ratios and types of powder filler and resin. Accordingly, quartz mineral with high hardness value consisting of silicon dioxide was used as the main component. The spaces between the coarse quartz grains were filled with fine quartz and talc powders. Polymer resin was used as a matrix to bind the mineral particles in the system. As a result of the void test, it was determined that the amount of resin and filler in the mixture was 43% by volume to fill grains with a size of 212-500 µm. Quartz and talc filler amounts were determined as 52%, 53%, 54% and 55%. Surface morphology, flux resistance, apparent density and water absorption percentage of the samples were investigated. As the amount of filler and resin increased, it was observed from SEM images that the pores closed. In addition, the amount of water absorption decreased, bending strength and apparent density increased. Flux resistance was lower in samples using talc filler and water absorption percentage was higher than in experiments using quartz filler. It was observed that quartz filler filled the voids better than talc filler.
