The Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī Dictionary in Practice of Polish Dragomans and Orientalists in the 17th and 18th Centuries
Öz
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how popular the Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī dictionary was in Poland during the 17th and 18th centuries, who used it, and for what purpose, and to provide evidence to support this. During the period under consideration, the field of Polish Oriental studies was dominated by translators of Oriental languages, some of whom had received a solid education in Istanbul and were familiar with the literature that was fundamental to students in Ottoman medreses. The Persian-Turkish verse dictionary Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī was included in the list of required medrese readings and introduced basic Persian vocabulary, the world of Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī’s Masnāvī, and the rules of versification. Polish dragomans learned the Ottoman Turkish language using the Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī and also quoted excerpts from the dictionary in their own translations. This article provides an overview of the availability and circulation of Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī among Polish dragomans and orientalists throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, primarily based on manuscript materials held in libraries in Poland and Germany (The Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), the Princes Czartoryski Library in Kraków, the University of Warsaw Library, the Wrocław University Library, and the Poznań Public Municipal Library). The circulation of copies of Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī in Europe (Austria, Great Britain) and Ottoman Bosnia has previously been examined by researchers such as Nil Ö. Palabıyık, Paul Babinski, Munir Drkić and Ahmed Zildžić; however, the presence and circulation of Şāhidī’s dictionary in Poland is described here for the first time. The study concludes that the Tuḥfe-i Şāhidī was regularly used in practice of Polish dragomans and orientalists in the 17th and 18th centuries.
