Öz

Arabic manuscripts within Islamic manuscript culture are among the primary witnesses to the history of knowledge and culture, not only through their textual content but also through their codicological and paleographical features. The script found in manuscripts provides important evidence for dating and establishing geographical provenance, while also offering crucial insights into the conditions of production, the circle of readers, and the identity of the scribe. In this respect, examining script beyond its aesthetic dimension—as a fundamental component of material culture—offers original contributions to the field. A notable example of this approach is The Manuscript Tradition of the Islamic West: Maghribī Round Scripts and the Andalusī Identity by Umberto Bongianino, which analyzes the Maghribī script tradition within a framework of paleographical development and as a visual expression of the cultural identity that emerged in the Andalusī–Maghribī context. The author argues that, from an early period onward, Maghribī script forms became a symbol representing the intellectual heritage of the region and its distinctive processes of identity formation. This review aims to analyze Bongianino’s main arguments and to assess the original contributions of this work to the literature on Islamic manuscript culture.

İslam yazma kültürü içinde Arapça el yazmaları, metinsel içerikleri kadar kodikolojik ve paleografik özellikleriyle de ilim ve kültür tarihinin temel tanıkları arasında yer alır. Yazma eserlerdeki yazı biçimi; tarihlendirme ve coğrafi aidiyetin tespitinin yanı sıra yazmanın üretim ortamı, okuyucu çevresi ve müstensih kimliği hakkında da önemli veriler sunmaktadır. Bu çerçevede yazının estetik boyutunun ötesinde, maddi kültürün temel bir unsuru olarak incelenmesi alana özgün katkılar sağlamaktadır. Bu yaklaşımın nitelikli bir örneği olan Umberto Bongianino’nun The Tradition of the Islamic West: Maghribī Scripts and Andalusī Identity adlı çalışması, mağribî yazı geleneğini paleografik bir gelişim süreci ekseninde ve Endülüs-Mağrib havzasında tebellür eden kültürel kimliğin görsel bir yansıması olarak ele almaktadır. Yazar, erken dönemden itibaren mağribî hat formlarının, bölge halklarının ilmî birikimlerini ve özgün kimlik inşalarını temsil eden bir sembol haline geldiğini ileri sürmektedir. Bu değerlendirme yazısı, Bongianino’nun temel argümanlarını ve söz konusu eserin İslam yazma kültürü literatürüne sağladığı özgün katkıları analiz etmeyi hedeflemektedir.
