From Herat to Constantinople: The Books of Muṣannifak Between Khorasan and the Ottoman Empire
Öz
Central Asian book cultures, like those in other regions, were part of larger networks of intellectual entanglements that led to the exchange and movement of books across regions. Thus, a history of Central Asian manuscripts needs to be written on a global scale. In the 15th century, one of the main routes of exchange was towards the fledgling Ottoman Empire in Anatolia and, eventually, Constantinople. This is the route taken by a productive writer, ʿAlī al-Bisṭāmī, known as Muṣannifak, who made a splendid career among the Ottomans. This contribution will follow not only the man, but also his books, from Khorasan to Constantinople.
