ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to measure the level of pressure injury knowledge of nurses working in intensive care and surgical units of a university hospital.
Material-Method: The study sample consisted of 160 intensive care and surgical nurses working in the surgical units of a university hospital who volunteered to participate in the study. The data were collected with a questionnaire consisting of a personal information form and the Pressure Injury Knowledge Level Assessment Tool 2.0-Updated Version (PUKAT 2.0-T) scale.
Results: The study was conducted with a total of 160 nurses, of whom 75.6% (n=121) were female and 24.4% (n=39) were male. The mean scores of the nurses from the ‘Etiology’ theme of the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Level Assessment Tool were 41.98±21.15, the mean scores from the ‘Classification and Observation’ theme were 56.41±29.97, and the mean scores from the ‘Risk Assessment’ theme were 72.19±33.53, The mean scores obtained from the ‘Nutrition’ theme were 56.25±26.48, the mean scores obtained from the ‘Prevention of Pressure Ulcers’ theme were 33.91±20.43, the mean scores obtained from the ‘Special Patient Groups’ sub-dimension were 45.63±37.36, and the mean scores obtained from the total scale were 46.13±16.68.
Conclusion: In the analyses conducted according to demographic and occupational characteristics, it was found that female nurses received higher scores from the themes of ‘Classification and Observation’ and ‘Risk Assessment’; nurses with a working period of 1-5 years in the profession received lower scores from the theme of ‘Risk Assessment’.
