Intensive Care Unit Syndrome

Öz

When a person becomes critically ill, injured and/or undergoes major surgery and requires intensive care a complex dilemma may arise. The condition of the illness, the specific caring situa- tion, and the enviroment lead to significant changes and effects in the senses and percep- tional abilities. Under these conditions, some patients may develop symptoms of Intensive Care Syndrome/delirium (psychological disturbances or acute confusion). It is estimated that confusion develops in 50% of hospitalized elderly patients; however, it is often misdiagnosed because of inaccurate assessment and assumptions that mental deterioration is the result of the effects of aging

Yoğun Bakım Sendromu

Öz

Bireyler, kritik hastalık, yaralanma ve/veya majör cerrahi girişim geçirip yoğun bakım ünitesinde kalmaları gerektiğinde ikilemler meydana gelebilir. Yoğun bakım ortamında uzun süre kalmak, hasta- lık durumları, algılama yeteneği ve duyular üzerin- de önemli etki ve değişikliklere yol açabilir. Yoğun bakım ünitesinde uzun süreli bakım verilen hasta- ların bazılarında yoğun bakım sendromu/deliryum olarak bilinen psikolojik karışıklık ya da konfüzyo- nun sık olarak geliştiği bilinmektedir. Hastanede yatan yaşlı hastaların %50’sinde konfüzyon geliş- mektedir, bu nedenle yaşlanmanın etkilerinin bir sonucu olan mental disoryantasyon yeterli tanım- lanmadığından sık olarak tanı yanlış konulmakta- dır
