Determination of Personality and Behavioural Changes in Traumatic Brain Injury
Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the early diagnosis on the personality
and behavioural changes among the patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Material and
Methods: The study ninety patients with TBI, admitted to the Gülhane Military Medical Academy
Haydarpaşa Training Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery , in 1 April 2006 and 30 July 2007. All
patients had Glasgow Coma Scale points higher than 13 and all patients were older than 15 years
old. Data were collected using patient demographic survey, Standartized Mini Mental Test (SMMT),
and Cloninger’s Temperament and Character Inventory (CTCI) at baseline in addition the SMNT
and CTCI were collected three months later. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse demographic
data and t test was used to compare the pre- and post-test. Results: The research considered
that the results of the SMMT, which were used to evaluate the cognitive situtations of the
patients with TBI, have been found within the normal value, when they are evaluated right after
the trauma and three months later. The results of the CTCI, were evaluated right after the trauma
and 3 months later and according to the patients surgical intervention and trauma localization and
they are found below the normal value and statistically significant. Conclusion: The study suggest
that the nursing care plan should take into consideration that the patients with TBI could develop
cognitive, emotional and psychiatric problems. The nursing care plan should include SMMT, CTCI
and other appropriate tests in the routine evaluations of the patients
