Intensive Care Unit and Complementary Therapies

Yıl 2010, Cilt: 14 Sayı: 1, 31 - 36, 01.06.2010

Intensive care units are known to be high stress areas. Many patients have conditions
that involve anxiety, high stress levels and experiences of pain. Anxiety and stress is a perceived
threat to the biological, physiological and social integrity of the patient. Certain complementary therapies
may be helpful to alleviate conditions of pain, sleep deficit, stress, anxiety and other sign and
symptoms among patients in the intensive care units. Complementary therapies are supportive therapies
that are added to standard treatments in the patient care. The health professionals have become
increasingly integrated these therapies into everyday practice. Complementary therapies are
an ideal way to assist in the non-pharmacological relief of stress and anxiety. The basic tenet of
complementary therapies is on holistic care. Exercise, diet, massage, aromatherapy, music, touch and
pet therapy were the most commonly used in practice. Educational programs for health care professionals
will increased the use of these therapies. As a result, the research on the effectiveness of
complementary therapies in the intensive care units should be encouraged. In this article, some of
complementary therapies used in the intensive care unit were described.
