Obstetric cases are generally young, primipara and healthy individuals. During this
period, due to a developing or existing before the pregnancy and requiring intensive care may occur
very serious problems. Intensive care units are special treatment units with high technological
equipment and with high “nurse per patient ratio” due to the close observation and rapid inter-
vention, also in which life threatening organ failures induced by prognosis of acute or chronic con-
ditions are treated and monitored. In both developed and developing countries, the dominant causes
of severe morbidity are obstetric haemorrhage and hypertensive disorders. However obstetric crit-
ical care in developing countries continues to be radically different from developed countries. In
Turkey majority of maternal mortality deaths are induced by direct obstetric reasons and can be pre-
vented with a prenatal care given by health professionals. The aims of this review to examine the
conditions requiring intensive care emergency obstetrics in pregnant women.
