Psychological Analysis of My Grandfather’s People from an Transgenerational Trauma Perspective

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 6 Sayı: 4, 110 - 124, 31.10.2025

Öz

Aim: This study analyzes My Grandfather’s People from an transgenerational trauma perspective. The main objective of the research is to reveal, through the film’s narrative and visual elements, the psychological mechanisms by which trauma originating from forced migration is transmitted from the first generation (the grandfather) to the third generation (the grandson).

Methods: This descriptive study was conducted using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research designs. The material of the analysis is the 2011 film My Grandfather’s People. Key scenes in the film that indicate the transmission of trauma were systematically examined from the perspective of transgenerational trauma models.

Results:The findings indicate that the first-generation family elder, Mr. Mehmet, experiences the trauma of the population exchange through unresolved grief and longing for his homeland. This trauma is transmitted to his third-generation grandson, Ozan, through various channels such as oral narratives, nonverbal cues, and the burden of fulfilling his grandfather’s unrealized dream. Ozan embodies this inherited burden in the form of identity crisis, social exclusion, and behavioral problems. While the grandfather’s suicide represents the tragic consequence of trauma, Ozan’s journey to Crete in an attempt to confront the past symbolizes the potential to break the cycle of transmission.
Conclusion: The film My Grandfather's People effectively illustrates how a historical trauma shapes the identity and psychological health of subsequent generations. The study concludes that rather than remaining a passive recipient of a traumatic legacy, actively confronting and re-contextualizing the past is a critical step toward breaking the cycle of trauma.
