THE CRITICISM AND COLLAPSE OF AN IDEALIZED LIFE IN THE MELİH CEVDET ANDAY NOVEL RAZİYE
Öz
A utopia is essentially a fictional offering of an
unattainable but better life. According to the approach of its author, being
able to define utopia with concepts such as unattainability,
dreams, ideal social order, and happiness
expands the meaning of it. A utopia resists the political atmosphere and social
relations of its period and introduces an ideal social order that is opposed to
the status quo. Published in 1975, Raziye is a novel by Melih Cevdet Anday.
The novel shows many similarities to a Utopian world, reflecting the urge to
escape from a restless atmosphere and
search for an ideal life. The novel is about an uncle trying to change his
adopted gypsy daughter into a noble soul while devising an ideal life to
improve the society he lives in. The
uncle's attempts to idealize the world he lives in is criticized through the
medium of his nephew. Raziye, on the other hand, tears apart this ideal life by
going back to her roots and staying grounded in the real world. In this study, using character analyses of
the uncle, the nephew and Raziye, I will address the collapse of an idealized
life and the conflicts between dreams and reality, between modern life and
primitive life, and between intellectuals and society.
