Evaluation of internet addiction levels of dentistry students at Kafkas University in relation to various factors

Abstract

Aims: Internet addiction, described by some scientists as the “epidemic of the 21st century,” is a behavioral public health problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate internet addiction among students of the Faculty of Dentistry at Kafkas University in relation to their sociodemographic characteristics and health-related conditions and behaviors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all students enrolled in the 2022–2023 academic year. Of the 143 first- to thirdyear students, 114 (79.72%) participated in the study. Internet addiction was assessed using the Young Internet Addiction TestShort Form (YIAT-SF). For statistical analyses, Student’s t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, and Kruskal–Wallis variance analysis were employed. Results: The mean YIAT-SF score of the students was 29.78±7.44. First-year students had significantly higher mean YIAT-SF scores compared to second- and third-year students (t=2.656, p=0.009). No statistically significant associations were found between mean YIAT-SF scores and variables such as sex, age, class, parental education, income, body-mass index, physical activity, extracurricular activity status, book reading, sports, artistic, and social activities. Conclusion: As no statistically significant associations were observed between mean YIAT-SF scores and the subgroups of variables, it is recommended that studies with larger populations be conducted. Internet addiction should be addressed through an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses all students and considers the problem in its entirety from multiple perspectives.
