Global research trends and future directions on periodontal furcation defects: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract

Aims: Furcation defects are considered one of the most complex and clinically significant challenges in periodontology, attracting sustained scientific interest. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications on this topic, assess the temporal evolution of research, identify the most influential contributions, and highlight existing knowledge gaps and future research priorities. Methods: Using a predefined search strategy, a Web of Science (WoS) search was conducted on 07.05.2025. Articles were ranked by citation count and analyzed with the R-based Bibliometrix program across four categories: performance, vocabulary, collaboration, and thematic analysis. Results: Egelberg J is the most influential author in this field, with an H-index of 14 and 759 citations. The Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Journal of Periodontology are the leading sources, with the highest H-indexes (38 and 37, respectively) and citation counts (3.967 and 4.421, respectively). "Furcation defect" was the most frequently used keyword. The USA plays a central role in furcation defect research, collaborating closely with Brazil. The field of furcation defects is largely shaped by themes related to regenerative periodontology, biomaterials, advanced imaging technologies, and clinical surgical approaches. Conclusion: Furcation defects remain a major clinical challenge, underscoring the relevance of regenerative approaches supported by advances in biomaterials and imaging technologies. This bibliometric analysis provides an integrated overview of influential studies and emerging trends, offering guidance for future research.
