Comparative in vitro evaluation of surface roughness following different polishing protocols

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of various polishing protocols, including two diamond-particle polishing pastes with different compositions, on the surface roughness of single-shade, bulk-fill single-shade, and nanofill composite resins. Methods: Three composite resins (Charisma Topaz One (Kulzer, Germany), Charisma Bulk Flow One (Kulzer, Germany), and Estelite Asteria (Tokuyama, Japan)) and three different polishing protocols (Super-Snap (Shofu, Japan), Ultradent Diamond Polish (Ultradent, USA), and Lucida Polishing Paste (Diashine, USA)) were applied in this study. Thirty disc-shaped samples from each composite resin were prepared and randomly divided into three groups (n=10). A profilometer was used to measure surface roughness (Ra), and surface images were obtained by SEM. Generalized linear models were used to compare the surface roughness values among the test groups, and Bonferroni test was applied for multiple comparisons. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Results: The lowest and highest surface roughness values were detected in the Charisma Bulk Flow One-Super-Snap group (0.36±0.11) and the Charisma Topaz One-Diamond group, respectively (0.72±0.27). The total surface roughness values for the polishing protocols, from lowest to highest, were as follows: Super-Snap0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that additional polishing with polishing pastes did not consistently provide superior surface roughness for the tested composite resins compared to multi-step disc systems. The bulk-fill single-shade composite resin generally exhibited lower surface roughness than the nanofill and the single-shade composite resins.
