Survival outcomes with first-line VEGF-targeted therapies in metastatic renal cell carcinoma: real-world evidence from a single center

Abstract

Aims: Fifty percent of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) die within the first year. Therefore, survival in the first-line setting is of paramount importance. Cabozantinib has been introduced for use in the first-line setting. We plan to conduct a study on its contribution to survival in Turkiye's population. Methods: A total of 108 patients with metastatic RCC were stratified according to whether they received sunitinib or cabozantinib. The two groups were similar in terms of their demographic characteristics. Survival outcomes and prognostic factors influencing survival were analyzed. Results: Overall survival was superior in the cabozantinib group, with a median of 21 months in sunitinib versus 47 months in cabozantinib group. International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium (IMDC) score and cabozantinib treatment were identified as independent prognostic factors by multivariant analysis. Conclusion: Tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies continue to play a significant role in the treatment of metastatic RCC. In countries where combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors is not available, cabozantinib is a good option and may improve survival rates.
