Evaluation of the Theses Completed in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Postgraduate Education in Türkiye

Abstract

Objectives Postgraduate education is a cornerstone of academic and professional development in dentistry, particularly in disciplines that rely heavily on advanced diagnostic technologies. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is a multidisciplinary specialty that supports clinical decision-making through radiographic imaging and interpretation. Despite the growing number of postgraduate theses produced in this field in Türkiye, there is limited evidence regarding their thematic focus, methodological diversity, and institutional distribution. A systematic evaluation of these theses is essential to identify research trends and guide future academic planning. Material and Methods This descriptive study analyzed postgraduate theses completed in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Türkiye between 2011 and 2025. Doctoral and specialty theses were retrieved from the Turkish National Thesis Center database using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 379 theses were included. Each thesis was evaluated according to year of completion, university, thesis type, author gender, subject category, research methodology, and radiographic imaging techniques. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software, and descriptive statistics were expressed as frequencies and percentages. Thematic intersections among subject categories were visualized using a heatmap to demonstrate multidimensional research patterns. Results Of the 379 theses analyzed, 75.2% were specialty theses and 24.8% were doctoral theses. Female researchers accounted for 70.08% of thesis authors. The most frequently studied topic was “Anatomical Structures and Measurements,” indicating a strong emphasis on morphometric evaluations. Radiographic measurement-based methodologies dominated the field, accounting for 83.57% of all theses. Cone Beam Computed Tomography was the most commonly used imaging modality, either alone or in combination with other techniques. Conclusion Postgraduate theses in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Türkiye are predominantly conducted within specialty training programs and are largely centered on radiographic imaging. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of academic trends in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and may serve as a reference for shaping future postgraduate research strategies.
