Visual Literacy in the Primary School Turkish Curriculum: Insights from Classroom Teachers

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate classroom teachers’ opinions and practices regarding visual literacy skills in the primary school Turkish curriculum. Data were collected through a teacher opinion questionnaire and a semi-structured interview form. The study group consisted of 14 classroom teachers working in Konya, selected using the criterion sampling method. The findings indicated that classroom teachers described the contribution of visual literacy skills from a broader perspective. It was also found that they most frequently used digital materials and adopted the question-answer and demonstration methods. The main problem with developing visual literacy skills was found to be students’ readiness level, whereas teachers’ main suggestions were related to teacher education. In addition, although visual literacy skills were embedded in all components of the curriculum, support for higher-level learning outcomes was found to be limited. It was recommended that that future research compare these findings with results from a document analysis of the curriculum.
