WHAT ARE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CHARACTERISTICS OF URBAN GREEN SPACES AND PEOPLE’S FREQUENCY AND DURATION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?
KENTSEL YEŞİL ALANLARIN KARAKTERİSTİK ÖZELLİKLERİ İLE İNSANLARIN FİZİKSEL AKTİVİTE SIKLIKLARI VE SÜRESİ ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİ NEDİR?

Abdullah AKPINAR [1]

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the characteristics of urban green spaces (UGSs) and people’s frequency and duration of physical activity (PA) level. The data of this study were collected in face-to-face interviews with 394 users who actively use UGSs for PA on April 1 to May 15, 2016 in seven different UGSs in Aydın city center. While the socio-economic status of participants was statistically controlled, the relationships between the characteristics of UGSs and people`s PA levels were examined. In the regression analyses, a positive relationship between people’s frequency of PA and many trees in UGSs. In addition, positive significant relationships between people’s duration of PA and varied flora and fauna, picnic areas, and exercise equipment in UGSs were found. On the other hand, a negative relationship between people’s duration of PA and fire and BBQs places. The findings suggest that levels of PA could be promoted with many trees, exercise equipment, flora and fauna, picnic areas, in UGSs. However, in future studies causal relationship needs to be conducted with longitudinal or intervention studies for more accurate results.
