The Relationship Between Spiritual Intelligence, Religiosity and Future Anxiety Among University Students

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between spiritual intelligence, religiosity, and future anxiety among university students. In modern societies, young adults are exposed to multidimensional pressures such as education, career expectations, economic uncertainty, and social demands, which have made future anxiety a significant psychological concern. In this context, it is important to investigate the role of spiritual and religious resources in individuals’ coping processes with future uncertainty. Employing a relational survey model, the study explores the effect of spiritual intelligence and religiosity on university students’ levels of future anxiety. The sample of the study consists of 225 university students from different faculties, selected through random sampling. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Spiritual Intelligence Traits Scale, Religiosity Scale, and Future Anxiety Scale. Independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and correlation analysis were utilized in the data analysis. The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between spiritual intelligence and religiosity, and significant negative relationships between both variables and future anxiety. Accordingly, higher levels of spiritual intelligence and religiosity are associated with lower levels of future anxiety among students. While no significant differences were found in spiritual intelligence, religiosity, or future anxiety with respect to faculty, gender, and income level, a significant difference was observed only in religiosity levels according to age. Overall, the results indicate that spiritual intelligence and religiosity may serve a protective and supportive function in reducing future anxiety among university students. The findings are discussed within the framework of the relevant literature.
