Descriptive Content Analysis of ELT Master’s Theses at Turkish Context between 2010 and 2020

Abstract

This study explores recent trends in English language teaching in and learning research in Türkiye by analyzing 115 master’s theses published by the universities in Türkiye between 2010 and 2020, sourced from the Council of Higher Education database. After excluding two unavailable and five ineligible theses, the study uses content analysis with a qualitative research design to examine aspects such as publication year, location, topic, research design, data collection tools, sample groups, and sizes, and data analysis methods. Findings reveal that 2019 is the peak year for publications, with Çukurova University producing the most research. The most common focus is on studies about attitudes and perceptions, with undergraduates as the primary sample group, typically in the 101-300 sample size range. Mixed-method designs are more prevalent, with questionnaires and scales widely used for data collection, while quantitative analysis is the most common analytical approach. This study aims to provide insights for researchers and decision-makers to inform future studies in the field.
