Book Review

Journal of Area Studies brings together studies that investigate different regions of the world from socioeconomic, political and cultural aspects. The aim of the Journal is to make a significant contribution to the literature by publishing original studies of area experts. While we accept manuscripts using the comparative method and case study, mixed method studies with primary data collection and policy recommendations are particularly welcome.

The Journal of Area Studies (AJAS) is an international, open-access and peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Institute for Area Studies, Social Sciences University of Ankara (SSUA). AJAS is published twice a year in June and December since 2022. AJAS adopts the Budapest Open Access Initiative principles, and it provides immediate open access to its content with no fees required at any stage of the process. The publication languages of the journal are Turkish, English, French and Arabic.

Page Design
● Manuscripts should be prepared in “Microsoft Word” program, in A4 paper format.
● The paper layout should be set as 2.5 cm margin on all sides.
● Paragraphs should begin with an indent of 1.25 cm.
● There must be 6 nk line-spacing after paragraphs and titles.


Author Information
● Manuscripts should not contain any information about the authors. Authors should state their titles, institutions, communication addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) numbers in Author Information Form. This form should be filled and sent with the article file.


Headings and Subheadings
● Turkish and English title of the article should be center-aligned, bold, 14 punto and all letters should be written in uppercase.
● All the other titles except for the title of the article should be written in bold, 12 punto and first letter of each word in upper-case.
● The headings and subheadings (except for the introduction and the conclusion) should be numbered decimally such as 1., 1.1., 1.1.1.


Abstract
● Articles written in a language other than English (Turkish, French, Arabic) must also include an English abstract.
● The length of the summary should be at least 150 and no more than 200 words. Abstract should be in Times New Roman font, 11 point size and 1 line spacing.
Minimum 3 maximum 5 keywords should be written in English and Turkish below abstracts parts.
● Title of “introduction” should start at the other (the second) page.


Main Text
● The main text of the manuscripts should be written with Times New Roman font, 12 punto and 1.5 line space.
● Articles should be between 6000 and 10000 words including the abstracts and reference list.
● The quotations within the text should be given in double-quotation marks; the quotations longer than 3 lines should be placed in a new paragraph with the entire quote indented from the left margin and should have one-spacing.
● Words used from different languages other than the manuscripts’ language should be written in italicand translation to Turkish or English as appropriate should be given in parentheses at its first use.

Tables and Figures
● Tables, graphs and figures can be given with a number and a defining title if and only if it is necessary to follow the idea of the article.
● Their titles should be only first letter of each word should be written with capital letter.
● Tables and figures should be centered on page and be prepared within the margins of page and should be without color.
● The sources of the tables, figures, and graphics to be included in the text should be placed under the tables, figures, and graphics in accordance with the in-text reference rules.
● Each appendix provided in the article must be submitted on separate pages after the references. Titles must be written in bold, capital letters, and left-aligned.

References
The 6th version of the APA (American Psychological Association) source style must be used for in-text quoting and citation.
● The citations should be arranged in a way that includes the author's surname, publication year and page number in parentheses.

Two Authors: (Bayram ve Çelik, 2021: 45)

Three or More Authors: (Arpa vd., 2019: 12)

Multiple Sources: (Bayar, 2004: 71; Arpa, 2008: 87)

● Explanations regarding some of the issues to be explained in the text can be specified as footnotes below the page.
● Footnotes should be written in Times New Roman, 10 pt. and single line spacing.
● References must be written in 12 points font size and alphabetic order of surnames of the authors. If the references in the bibliography pass to the second line, make careful that the second line starts with 1 TAB.

The Journal of Area Studies adheres to academic principles and ethical values in its publication policy. The publications of the journal should follow the national and international standards regarding ethical principles and values, in particular the standards determined by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and the principles determined in YÖK "Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Directive" (https://publicationethics.org/ https://www.yok.gov.tr/Sayfalar/Kurumsal/Mevzuat/Bilimsel-Arastirma-Ve-…). The publication request of the works that are found to be in violation of the research and publication ethics standards accepted in the article evaluation process will be rejected. If the contradiction in question is detected after the publication of the work, the work will be removed from the publication.

The principles stated below have been prepared based on the standards specified by COPE and YÖK.



Editor and Editorial Board Responsibilities

Editors have to take precautions against necessary unethical behaviors, especially intellectual property rights.

Editors evaluates manuscripts for their scientific content without regard to ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, religious belief or political philosophy of the authors. He/She provides a fair double-blind peer review of the submitted articles for publication.

Editors are obliged to protect the personal information of authors and referees within the scope of ethical principles.

Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the contents and overall quality of the publication. He/She must publish errata pages or make corrections when needed.

Editors have complete responsibility and authority to reject/accept an article. Editors should have no conflict of interest with respect to articles they reject/accept.



Responsibilities of the Referees

Referees (Reviewers) examine the articles submitted as to methodology, scope, and originality and decide whether they are appropriate for publication.

Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based only on scientific content, without regard to ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, religious belief, or political philosophy of the authors. They may not have any conflict of interest or competing interest with respect to the research, the authors, and/or the research funders.

Referee reports should be objective and moderate. Defamatory, derogatory, and accusatory statements must be avoided.

Referees should avoid superficial and ambiguous expressions in evaluation reports. For the evaluations that resulted negative, the missing points and imperfections of the article must be shown clearly and concretely.

Referees should not share their evaluations reports or information about the article with others and should not directly communicate with the authors without the permission of the editor.

Reviewers are responsible for the concealment of the articles they received and for not using the information attained from the reviewing process for personal interests.



Authors Responsibilities

The authors are responsible for the articles' conformity with scientific and ethical rules. Articles to be sent to the journal must be original, not previously published elsewhere, or not in the process of being evaluated in another journal for publication.

Authors must confirm that their submitted article is their own original work, which does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any other person or entity, and cannot be construed as plagiarizing any other published work, including their own previously published work (self- plagiarism). They should obtain permission or cite to reproduce any content from other sources.

All sources used in the article should be properly indicated in the references; copyright materials must be used in accordance with copy laws and agreements and the required permissions.

All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

In studies requiring ethical committee permission, information about the permission (board name, date and issue number) should be included in the method section and on the first/last page of the article.

It should be made sure that other individuals shown as co-authors, have contributed to the research. Persons who do not have academic contributions should not be cited as additional authors.

During the evaluation phase, if the author(s) realizes that there is a mistake with their work, they should immediately contact the editor.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatice Çelik is the Head of the Department of Asian Studies and the Vice-Director of the Institute for Area Studies at the Social Sciences University of Ankara (SSUA), Türkiye. She graduated from the Department of International Relations at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara. She got her master’s degree in Asian Studies at METU. She was a visiting researcher at the Academy of Korean Studies, South Korea for a six-month period in 2013 based on a scholarship. She earned her Ph.D. in the Area Studies Ph.D. program with her thesis on South Korea-ASEAN relations at METU. She has published numerous articles and book chapters on the foreign policy and bilateral relations of Asian countries, security, women, environment and many other themes. Her research interests include the Asian international system, comparative and critical area studies, middle powers, politics of the Korean peninsula, ASEAN region.

Akademik hayatından önce farklı kamu kurumlarında yurt içi ve yurt dışı idari görevlerde bulunan Enver ARPA Ankara Sosyal Bilimler Üniversitesine 2017 yılı Ağustos ayında katılmıştır. Yurt dışı görevleri, TİKA Ortadoğu ve Afrika Dairesi Başkanlığı ve Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı dış ilişkiler müşavirliği gibi görevleri süresince uluslararası tecrübe edindi ve bu tecrübesini yazarak okuyucuya aktardı. “Afrika Satrancında Sudan” “Afrika Seyahatnamesi”, “Hayata Dair – Sanal Dünya Yorumları” gibi kitaplarının yanısıra İslam Dünyası ve Afrika kıtasıyla ilgili çeşitli çalışmalarda bulundu. Özellikle İslam dünyasında yaşanmakta olan şiddet olaylarıyla ilgili araştırma ve çalışmalarını halen sürdürmektedir.

He is currently the Head of the Department of African Studies at the Institute for Area Studies, Social Sciences University of Ankara. He is the author of Une histoire diplomatique des États ouest-africains and Çin-Afrika İş Birliği (China-Africa Cooperation). Dr. Yavuz Çelik received his bachelor's degree from the Department of History at Istanbul University. He completed both his master's and PhD studies in China with a scholarship from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey. He earned his master's degree at Nankai University in the Department of International Relations and Public Policy and his PhD at Shanghai University in the Department of Global Studies. His research focuses on China's policy in Central Asia, its socio-economic relations in the region, its increasing influence, and its competition with other regional actors. He has published several academic articles on China-Central Asia relations. As of December 2024, he has started working at the Institute for Area Studies at the Social Sciences University, teaching Comparative Politics in Turkic States.

Prof. Dr. Ali Asker 1968 doğumludur. 1986-1993 yılları Azerbaycan Teknik Üniversitesinde Radyoteknik Fakültesinde lisans ve yüksek lisans (bileşik) eğitime başlamıştır. 1987-1989 yıllarında SSCB Silahlı Kuvvetleri Transkafkasya Askeri Dairesinde askerlik görevini bitirdikten sonra eğitimine devam etmiştir. Şubat 1992’de Hocalı Soykırımı’nın ardından, gönüllü olarak Azerbaycan Milli Ordusuna yazılmış ve Birinci Karabağ Savaşı’na iştirak etmiştir. Öğrenim sebebiyle terhis edildikten eğitimine devam etmiş, 1993’te eğitimini tamamlayarak uzman mühendis derecesi almıştır. Ali Asker, 1993’te Bakü Devlet Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesini kazanarak 1997’de yüksek onur diplomasıyla bu eğitim kurumundan mezun olmuştur. 1997-1998 yıllarında Ege Üniversitesi Türk Dünyası Araştırmaları Enstitüsünde bir sene hazırlık eğitiminin ardından Marmara Üniversitesi SBE Kamu Hukuku Anabilim dalında yüksek lisans eğitimine başlamış, 2000 yılında Azerbaycan Cumhuriyeti Anayasasında Devlet Sistemi ve Temel Öğeleri konulu tezini savunmuştur. Ali Asker, Genel Kamu Hukuku dalında başladığı doktora programından “Eski Sosyalist Ülkelerde Siyasi Rejim Değişmeleri” tezini savunarak 2007 yılında mezun olmuştur. Değişik düşünce kuruluşlarında Kafkasya, Rus-Slav, Orta Asya ve Türk Dünyası üzerine çalışmalar yapmış, birçok yayına ve tercüme esere imza atmıştır. 2011 yılından Karabük Üniversitesi İİBF Siyaset Bilimi ve Kamu Yönetimi Bölümünde öğretim üyesi olarak göreve başlamıştır. 2016’da Bölge Çalışmaları alanında doçent unvanı almıştır. Dünya anayasalarını Türkçeye kazandırması nedeniyle kendisine 2019 yılında Hukuk Ansiklopedisi Özel Ödülü tevcih edilmiştir. 2021’de aynı fakültenin Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümünde Uluslararası Siyaset Profesörü kadrosuna atanmıştır. Ali Asker’in Rusya ve Avrasya ülkeleriyle ilgili bölge çalışmaları, hukuk, tarih, düşünce tarihi ve kültür üzerine çok sayıda yayını bulunmaktadır.

"Tanveer Jeewa is a junior lecturer in constitutional law at Stellenbosch University, where she has recently completed her Doctor of Laws (LLD). Her doctoral research addresses South Africa’s housing crisis and the mass unlawful land occupations that perpetuate apartheid-era spatial inequalities. Tanveer also works as a consultant for public interest litigation, assisting NGOs such as the Development Action Group in finding creative, practical remedies to the issues explored in her research. She has previously served as a law clerk at the Constitutional Court of South Africa in Justice Theron’s chambers and has held positions at the International Commission of Jurists and the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (UN ICTY). She was also a United Nations Delegate at the Youth Assembly, where she received the Resolution Project Fellowship for her commitment to social impact and collaboration. In addition to her academic work, Tanveer frequently provides media commentary on topics related to her areas of expertise, including on international platforms. She holds an LLB and LLM in Public Law from the University of Cape Town, an LLD from Stellenbosch University, and a Graduate Diploma in Law (UK)."

Sam Hirst is the Associate Director of Bilkent CRS. He joined Bilkent’s Department of International Relations in September 2017. His research focuses on Russia, Turkey, and relations between the two states. In thematic terms, he is interested in transnational history and questions related to empire and nationalism – both Russia and Turkey’s legacies of imperial power and also their opposition to Western imperialism. His work has been published in, among other places, the journals Kritika, Slavic Review, and Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Before coming to Bilkent, he worked at the European University at St. Petersburg, where he served for two years as chair of the history department.

Işıl Acehan, Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi, Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü'nde Dr. Öğretim Üyesi olarak görev yapmaktadır. Yüksek lisans ve doktora eğitimini Bilkent Üniversitesi'nde tamamlayan Dr. Acehan, akademik çalışmalarında ağırlıklı olarak Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndan ve sonrasında Türkiye ile Orta Doğu'dan Kuzey Amerika ve Avrupa'ya göçler, Türk diasporası ve Türkiye-ABD ilişkileri konularına odaklanmaktadır.


Doktora çalışmalarını Fulbright bursuyla Harvard Üniversitesi'nde yürüten Dr. Acehan, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ve Avrupa'da uzun yıllar süren kapsamlı araştırmalar yapmıştır. Bu süreçte Smithsonian Enstitüsü bursunun yanı sıra Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, Freie Universität Berlin (JFK Enstitüsü) ve Turkish Cultural Foundation gibi prestijli kurumların burslarını almaya hak kazanmıştır.

Doktora sonrası çalışmalarını 2019 yılında İtalya, Bologna'daki Fondazione Per Le Scienze Religiose Giovanni XXIII araştırma merkezinde burslu olarak tamamlayan Dr. Acehan, ardından George Mason Üniversitesi, Ali Vural Ak Küresel İslam Araştırmaları Merkezi'nde misafir öğretim üyesi olarak görev almıştır. Burada geçirdiği üç yıl boyunca ABD'deki Türk göçmenlerle ilgili belgesel, sergi ve anıt yapımı gibi pek çok projeyi başarıyla yürütmüş ve tamamlamıştır.

Dr. Acehan, akademik çalışmalarının yanı sıra Türkiye ile ABD'nin tarihsel ve kültürel ilişkileri ile etkili kamu diplomasisi faaliyetleri gibi konularda hem akademiye hem de topluma yönelik atölye çalışmaları ve seminerler düzenlemiştir.

Marian Karagyozov has an LL. M. degree from the Law Faculty of Sofia University and a bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from New Bulgarian University. He is a policy analyst at the Institute for Balkan Studies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and editor-in-chief of the not-for-profit UN Association News media. He has worked as a foreign policy expert, Bulgarian National Radio`s Turkey correspondent (2017 – 2020), and chief of staff of the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria. He has authored a monograph on Turkish Foreign Policy, several book chapters, and numerous articles for Bulgarian media outlets, mostly on issues related to Turkey and the Middle East. Thereafter, Dr. Sungur joined ASBÜ Institute for Area Studies, Department of Asian Studies in September 2023.

- Muhittin Ataman 1968 yılında Bitlis’in Tatvan ilçesinde doğdu. 1992 yılında Ankara Üniversitesi, Siyasal Bilgiler Fakültesi, Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nden mezun oldu.
- 1994-1996 yılları arasında ABD’nin Central Oklahoma Üniversitesi’nde yüksek lisans, 1996-1999 yılları arasında Kentucky Üniversitesi’nde ise doktora çalışmalarını tamamladı.
- 2001 yılından 2014 yılına kadar Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi İİBF Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak görev yaptı.
- 2012-2014 yılları arasında Üniversitelerarası Kurul (ÜAK) Genel Sekreteri olarak görev yaptı. Aynı dönemde Yükseköğretim Kurulu (YÖK)’nda Başkan Danışmanı ve Dış İlişkiler Birimi Koordinatörü olarak çalıştı.
- 2014-2017 döneminde Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt Üniversitesi Siyasal Bilgiler Fakültesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak çalıştı.
- 2011 yılından beri SETA düşünce kuruluşunda araştırmacı ve yönetici olarak çalışmaktadır.
- 2014-2020 yılları arasında TRT Haber televizyon kanalında yayınlanan haftalık dış politika programlarına (Açı, Dışa Bakış, Küresel Siyaset, Küresel Analiz ve Stratejik Analiz) daimî katılımcı ve yorumcu olarak katkıda bulunmuştur. Bugünlerde de TRT1 televizyon kanalında yayınlanan haftalık Enine Boyuna programına yorumcu olarak katılmaktadır.
- 2017 yılından beri Daily Sabah Gazetesi’nde köşe yazıları yazan Prof. Ataman, Insight Turkey (10 yıldır) ve Ortadoğu Yıllığı (20 yıldır) dergilerinin editörlüğünü yürütmektedir.
- Şu an itibariyle Ankara Sosyal Bilimler Üniversitesi, Siyasal Bilgiler Fakültesi, Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nde Bölüm Başkanı olarak görev yapmaktadır.
- 9 Nisan 2025 tarihinde ise Cumhurbaşkanlığı Güvenlik ve Dış Politikalar Kurulu üyesi olarak atandı.
- Bugüne kadar çok sayıda kitap derlemiştir. Bunlar: Dünya Çatışmaları, Küresel Güç ve Refah, Türkiye’de 15 Temmuz Darbe Girişimi, Doğu Akdeniz ve Türkiye’nin Hakları, Libya Krizi, Çıkmazdan Çözüme Karabağ Sorunu, Kudüs, Türkiye Dış Politikasında Yüzyıllık Stratejik Dönüşüm ve Aksa Tufanı: Ortadoğu Siyasetinde Bir Dönüm Noktası.
- Daha çok Türk dış politikası ve Ortadoğu siyaseti konularında, özellikle de Körfez ülkeleri hakkında akademik çalışmalar yapmaktadır. Prof. Ataman’ın çalışmaları ulusal ve uluslararası ölçekte yayınlanan çok sayıda Türkçe, İngilizce ve Arapça dergi ve derleme kitapta yayınlanmıştır.
