Investigation of Emotional Intelligence Levels of Pre-service Teachers In Terms of Various Variables and Their Opinions

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the emotional intelligence levels of teacher candidates according to various variables and to determine teacher candidates' views on emotional intelligence. The study employed a mixed research method using both qualitative and quantitative data. In the study conducted with 811 teacher candidates, the Personal Information Form and the Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Scale were used as quantitative data collection tools. The quantitative data of the research were analyzed using the SPSS 23 package program, and in addition to frequency, percentage, mean, median, kurtosis, and skewness calculations, one-way ANOVA analysis and independent sample t-tests were applied in intergroup comparisons. A semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher was used as a qualitative data collection tool in the research. Data collected from 98 teacher candidates selected using purposive sampling were analyzed using content analysis. According to the quantitative results of the study, it was concluded that the emotional intelligence levels of teacher candidates were at an intermediate level. It was determined that, according to the success score variable, differentiation occurred only in the general mood dimension of emotional intelligence, according to the gender variable, differentiation occurred only in the stress management and adaptability dimensions, and according to the department of study variable, differentiation occurred in all dimensions. The qualitative results of the study revealed that teacher candidates had positive thoughts about emotional intelligence. They emphasized the importance of the relationship between emotional intelligence and the teaching profession, stressing that emotional intelligence is important for making the education and training process more effective.
