Students Opinions About Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication in Foreign Language Teaching

Abstract

The task-based approach, widely accepted after 2000s and systematically explained by “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (CEFR), considers a foreign language user a social actor in a society. In this approach, it is claimed that an individual communicates with the members of different cultural communities not only by spoken language but also by his behaviors in that community. The task-based approach also aims to give a student tolerance against the cultural differences and awareness of his cultural identity. In order to reach this target, students have to be provided by some basic concepts such as identity, prejudice, cliche, discrimination, ethnocentrism and interculturality that compose the intercultural communication approach. This study aims to find out the opinions of fourth grade students in French Language Teaching Programme on the basic concepts of this approach. In this research, which was designed as case study, the data were collected by the interview forms including open-ended questions in order to get detailed ideas of the participants on the above mentioned concepts. It is preferred to have purposeful sampling as a choosing method for the current case study. Consent forms proving this study was based upon volunteering were given to the participants and they were informed about the aim and the content of the study. The data were analysed by the content analysis method and the results were discussed with reference to foreign language teaching.

Yabancı Dil Öğretiminde Kültürlerarası İletişimin Temel Kavramları Konusunda Öğrenci Görüşleri

Abstract

2000’li yıllardan itibaren yabancı dil öğretiminde benimsenen ve Avrupa Dilleri Ortak Çerçeve Programı’nda sistematik biçimde açıklanmış olan Görev Temelli Yaklaşım, yabancı dil kullanıcısını toplum içinde bir sosyal aktör olarak kabul etmektedir. Bireyin sadece dilsel ögelerle değil, toplum içindeki davranışları ile de farklı dil ve kültürden bireylerle iletişim kurduğu savunulan bu yaklaşımda, yabancı dil öğrenen bireyde, kültürel farklılıklara karşı hoşgörülü bir bakış açısı ve kendi kültürel kimliğine karşı da farkındalık geliştirmesi hedeflenir. Bu hedefi gerçekleştirmek için yabancı dil öğretiminde öğrencide, kültürlerarası iletişim yaklaşımında ön plana çıkan bazı kavramlarla ilgili farkındalık kazandırılması gerekmektedir. Bu çalışma Yabancı Diller Eğitimi Bölümü Fransızca Öğretmenliği Programı 4.sınıf öğrencilerinin kimlik, önyargı, klişe, ayrımcılık, etnik merkezcilik ve kültürlerarasılık kavramları ile ilgili görüşlerini belirlemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Durum çalışması olarak desenlenen bu nitel araştırmada, öğrencilerin sözü geçen kavramlarla ilgili görüşlerini detaylı biçimde belirleyebilmek için açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan görüşme formları aracılığıyla veri toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizi sürecinde içerik analizi yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin, belirtilen kavramlarla ilgili görüşlerinden ulaşılan temalar yabancı dil öğretimi ile ilişkilendirilmiş ve raporlaştırılmıştır.
