Examining the Mediating Role of Academic Self-Efficacy in the Relationship Between Nomophobia and Psychological Resilience

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between nomophobia, academic self-efficacy, and psychological resilience in university students and to determine the mediating role of academic self-efficacy in the effect of nomophobia on psychological resilience. The study was conducted with 478 university students studying in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Data were collected using the Nomophobia Scale, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Psychological Resilience Scale. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were employed in the data analysis. The analysis results showed a moderately low, yet significant, negative relationship between nomophobia and academic self-efficacy (r=-0.259; p<0.01) and a low, yet significant, negative relationship between nomophobia and psychological resilience (r =−0.104; p<0.05). A positive and moderately significant relationship was found between academic self-efficacy and psychological resilience (r=0.315; p<0.01). According to the regression analysis results, nomophobia has a significant and negative effect on psychological resilience (β=-0.078; p<0.001). When academic self-efficacy was included in the model, this effect decreased but remained significant, indicating that academic self-efficacy played a partial mediating role (β=−0.069; p<0.001). The research results show that an increase in nomophobia levels can negatively affect the psychological resilience of university students, while academic self-efficacy can partially mitigate this negative effect. In this context, developing educational and counseling-based practices that aim to strengthen students' academic self-efficacy is crucial.
