Old Uyghur Fragments on Faxiang Buddhism (Chapter 19)

Abstract

The Faxiang school ‘dharma characteristics’ or the Weishi school ‘pure consciousness’ that developed on the basis of Yogācāra was introduced by the Chinese Buddhist traveler and translator Xuanzang (602-664). Xuanzang, one of the important figures of the Chinese Tang Dynasty, brought new texts and teachings to China after his travel to the important religious areas of Buddhism between 629-645. Among them, in the light of Vasubandhu’s Triṃśikā and the ten prose commentaries written on it, he wrote his work called Cheng weishi lun and this work was among the main literary sources of the Faxiang school. At this point, the subject of this study is eight fragments belonging to Faxiang Buddhism, which are preserved in the Berlin Turfan Collection today. These fragments are as follows: Mainz 848-8 (fragment d) (T I D 8), Mainz 848-7 (fragment c) (T I D 7), Mainz 848-6 (fragment b) (T I D 6), Mainz 848-5 (fragment a) (T I D 5), Mainz 840-4 (fragment d) ([T I] D 4), Mainz 840-3 (fragment c) (T I D 3), Mainz 840-2 (fragment b) (T I D 2) and Mainz 840-1 (fragment a) (T I D 1). In fact, these eight fragments constitute the 19th part of a manuscript, which is thought to consist of at least thirty chapters of a compilation preserved in the Berlin Turfan Collection. When viewed as a whole, a total of 46 lines of Old Uyghur text remained from the 19th chapter of this collected edition. In this study, the edition of the aforementioned fragments, their translation to Turkish, notes on the text, and index and glossary will be presented.

Faxiang Budizmi’ne İlişkin Eski Uygurca Fragmanlar (19. Bölüm)

Abstract

Yogācāra temelinde gelişen Faxiang ‘dharma özellikleri’ veya Weishi ‘salt bilinç’ ekolü Çinli Budist seyyah ve mütercim Xuanzang (602-664) tarafından ortaya konmuştur. Çin Tang Hanedanlığı’nın önemli şahsiyetlerinden biri olan Xuanzang, 629-645 yılları arasında Budizm’in önemli dinî muhitlerine yaptığı seyahat sonrasında yeni metinleri ve bununla birlikte öğretileri de Çin’e getirmiştir. Bunlar arasında Vasubandhu’nun Triṃśikā’sı ve bunun üzerine kaleme alınan on mensur tefsir ışığında Xuanzang, Cheng weishi lun isimli eserini yazmış ve bu eser Faxiang ekolünün esas yazınsal kaynakları arasında yer almıştır. Bu çalışmanın konusunu da bu noktada Faxiang Budizmi’ne ait ve bugün Berlin Turfan Koleksiyonu içerisinde korunan sekiz fragman oluşturmaktadır. Bu fragmanlar sırasıyla şöyledir: Mainz 848-8 (d fragmanı) (T I D 8), Mainz 848-7 (c fragmanı) (T I D 7), Mainz 848-6 (b fragmanı) (T I D 6), Mainz 848-5 (a fragmanı) (T I D 5), Mainz 840-4 (d fragmanı) ([T I] D 4), Mainz 840-3 (c fragmanı) (T I D 3), Mainz 840-2 (b fragmanı) (T I D 2) ve Mainz 840-1 (a fragmanı) (T I D 1). Esasında bu sekiz fragman Berlin Turfan Koleksiyonu’nda korunan en az otuz bölümden oluştuğu düşünülen derleme eser veya mecmua olarak nitelendirilebilecek bir yazma eserin 19. bölümünü oluşturmaktadır. Bir bütün olarak bakıldığında bu mecmuanın 19. bölümünden irili ufaklı toplam 46 satırlık bir Eski Uygurca metin kalmıştır. Bu çalışmada bahsi geçen fragmanların neşri, Türkiye Türkçesine aktarımı, metne ilişkin notları ve dizin ile sözlüğü sunulacaktır.
