Politeness and Face Threatening Actions in Turkish

Abstract

The tradition of developing strategies and putting forward principles, which started with Grice with the handling of politeness as a linguistic concept, has turned into a theoretical approach in the hands of different researchers over time. The process, which continued with names such as Lakoff (1975) and Leech (1983), reached one of its advanced forms with Brown and Levinson (1987). For Brown and Levinson, who adopt Goffman's face approach, politeness is a tool that should be used to prevent possible friction between the individuals who constitute the society. Through politeness, the individual and social dignity called face can be achieved and preserved. When respectability is realised in the direction of not obstructing the speaker's wishes, the negative face will be protected; when it involves appreciation, approval and admiration, the positive face will be protected. For this reason, both positive and negative face-saving strategies such as dealing with the face-saving listener, avoiding conflict, cooperating, making an offer, being respectful, and apologising are presented. When these strategies are not applied, the negative and positive faces of both the speaker and the listener are considered to be damaged, in other words, jeopardised.
In this study, Oğuz Atay's only theatre work, Oyunlarla Yaşayanlar is studied. In the text, actions that threaten the negative face of the listener, the positive face of the listener, the negative face of the speaker and the positive face of the speaker were identified. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that actions threatening the negative face of the listener (141 actions) were preferred more frequently in the text in which 304 actions were monitored, while actions threatening the negative face of the speaker (11 actions) were used the least in the general distribution.

Türkçede Nezaket ve Yüz Tehdit Eden Eylemler

Abstract

Nezaketin bir dilbilim kavramı olarak ele alınması ile beraber Grice’la başlayan strateji geliştirme ve ilkeler öne sürme geleneği zamanla farklı araştırmacıların elinde kuramsal yaklaşıma dönüşmüştür. Lakoff (1975), Leech (1983) gibi isimlerle devam eden süreç olgun hâllerinden birine Brown ve Levinson (1987) ile ulaşmıştır. Goffman’ın yüz (face) yaklaşımını benimseyen Brown ve Levinson için nezaket, toplumu oluşturan bireyler arasındaki muhtemel sürtüşmenin önüne geçmek için kullanılması gereken bir araç niteliğindedir. Nezaket sayesinde yüz adı verilen bireysel ve toplumsal saygınlık elde edilip korunabilir hale gelebilecektir. Saygınlık konuşurun isteklerinin engellenmemesi yönünde gerçekleştiğinde olumsuz yüz (negative face); takdir edilme, onaylanma, beğenilme içerdiğinde olumlu yüz (positive face) korunmuş olacaktır. Bu sebeple yüzü koruyan dinleyici ile ilgilenme, anlaşmazlıktan kaçınma, iş birliği yapma, teklifte bulunma, saygılı olma, özür dileme gibi hem olumlu hem de olumsuz yüzü koruyan stratejiler sunulmaktadır. Söz konusu stratejiler uygulanmadığında ise hem konuşurun hem de dinleyicinin olumsuz ve olumlu yüzü zedelenmiş, yani tehlikeye girmiş kabul edilmektedir.
Bu çalışmada Oğuz Atay’ın tek tiyatro eseri olan Oyunlarla Yaşayanlar adlı metin incelenmiştir. Metinde dinleyicinin olumsuz yüzünü, dinleyicinin olumlu yüzünü ile konuşurun olumsuz yüzünü, konuşurun olumlu yüzünü tehdit eden eylemler tespit edilmiştir. Tarama sonucunda 304 eylemin izlendiği metinde dinleyicinin olumsuz yüzünü tehdit eden eylemlerin (141 eylem) daha sık tercih edildiği, konuşurun olumsuz yüzünü tehdit eden eylemlerin (11 eylem) ise genel dağılımda en az kullanıldığı görülmüştür.
