Evaluation of Placental Weight and Birth Weight Using Variables Such as Maternal Age, Gestational Age, Parity, and Smoking History

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between neonatal birth weight and placental weight considering variables such as maternal age, gestational age, parity, and smoking history. Material and Methods This prospective study included pregnant women who visited our clinic and gave birth at our hospital. After birth, the newborn and the placenta were weighed separately using an electronic scale and the data were recorded. Results In this study, data from 219 patients aged 18–43 years were evaluated. Thirty-five (16.0%) patients had a history of smoking, and the mean birth weight and placental weight was 3312.4 ± 384.9 (g) and 612.5 ± 119.6 (g), respectively. Across all cases, there was a positive correlation between placental weight and birth weight. For every 100-g increase in placental weight, birth weight increased by 194.5 g. The mean birth weight was statistically significantly lower in the group with a history of smoking (p < 0.001). Conversely, no statistically significant correlation was found between placental weight and birth weight in the group with a history of smoking (r = 0.262, p = 0.129). Conclusion In this study, we found a positive correlation between placental weight and birth weight, which was independent of maternal age and parity. We determined that smoking during pregnancy primarily leads to a decrease in the neonatal weight rather than in the placental weight.
