CHOOSİNG ULTRASOUND AS A THESİS TOPİC İN EMERGENCY MEDİCİNE: A BİBLİOGRAPHİC ANALYSİS ON CONTENT AND PUBLİCATİON STATUS

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the content characteristics and publication status of ultrasonography-themed emergency medicine specialization theses in Türkiye. The primary objective was to assess bibliometric features, while the secondary objective was to investigate factors such as publication quality, authorship order, and journal indexing. Material and Methods: This descriptive retrospective study analyzed 260 theses completed between 1998 and 2023, available via the National Thesis Center of the Turkish Council of Higher Education. The publication status was determined through searches conducted in various national and international academic databases. Three researchers independently reviewed each thesis using a standardized data form, and a fourth researcher validated the classification. Results: Among the 260 theses analyzed, 40.8% (n=106) were published in scientific journals. The average time from thesis completion to publication was 3.0±2.3 years, with shorter durations observed for theses published in internationally indexed journals. Ultrasonography was predominantly used for diagnostic purposes (93.5%), with the heart being the most frequently examined organ and echocardiography the most commonly employed protocol. Most theses were conducted in major metropolitan centers, and publication rates were higher for theses supervised by associate professors and assistant professors. Conclusions: A substantial proportion of ultrasonography-themed theses in emergency medicine have been converted into scientific publications, highlighting the high academic productivity potential in this field.
