Metaphorical Perceptions of Gifted Students towards the Concept of Artwork
Abstract
• This research aims to analyse the perceptions and thoughts of gifted students about the concept of artwork through metaphors. This research was carried out according to the interpretive (hermeneutic) research approach, which is one of the qualitative research methods. There are 242 students from Konya BİLSEM (Science and Art Centre) affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the study group of the research. Participants were selected according to the easily accessible sampling method (Creswell, 2012) from the purposeful sampling methods. Students are represented by coding S1, S2…. Etc. In this direction, the data collection tool is structured as “an artwork is like…………………, because ………………………….”. According to the result of this research, the students emphasized the expressive feature of an artwork 41 (17.8%) more. The word life seen in this category was the most repeated metaphor. It is seen from the metaphor explanatory sentences produced by BİLSEM students that they generally perceive an artwork as painting. The second most emphasized case in the study is that an artwork is a source of aesthetic pleasure. According to the students, an artwork is a quality that makes people feel good, entertaining and permanent. The concept of an artwork was emphasized by BİLSEM students as an object that should be original and effort requiring. Case studies can be presented to BİLSEM students about what an artwork is and how it is produced. It should be ensured that BİLSEM students examine sample criticisms about selected artworks. Sample lesson plans can be applied to BİLSEM students on the perception of the concept of artwork and the results can be compared.
