The Evolution Of Art Expertise: A Historical Overview

Abstract

Art expertise has always been of great importance from the past to the present as a profession that analyzes the history and technical features of works of art and determines their originality and value. In the 18th century and later, the studies of important figures such as Johann David Passavant, Giovanni Morelli, Bernard Berenson, Max Jakob Friedländer and Maurits Michiel van Dantzig on stylistic evaluations and determinations of originality of works of art have made significant contributions to the development of art expertise. Passavant’s catalog studies of old masters’ works, Morelli’s Morellian Method that focuses on details while examining works of art, Berenson’s stylistic evaluations that developed the Morellian Method, Friedländer’s ideas that advocated the necessity of scientific analysis methods together with stylistic evaluations and Dantzig’s pictological approaches that create objective criteria have formed the cornerstones of art expertise. The development of technology and the widespread use of scientific analysis methods in determining the originality of works of art have transformed art expertise into an interdisciplinary approach. In the examination of works of art, the determination of the pigment and binder content used by artists, the determination of the age of organic materials and the examination of the structural properties of materials have provided more accurate results. This article examines the evolution of art expertise, how it has developed from Johann David Passavant to the present, the stylistic evaluations, analytical methods and interdisciplinary approaches used by art experts while evaluating works. In addition, the current status of art expertise in Turkey is evaluated and developments and practices in this field are discussed. The transformation of art experts' working methods throughout the historical process and the contributions of modern technologies to this profession are important in terms of evaluating works of art with accurate results.

Sanat Uzmanlığının Evrimi: Geçmişten Günümüze Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Sanat uzmanlığı, sanat eserlerinin tarihini, teknik özelliklerini analiz eden, orijinalliğini ve değerini belirleyen bir meslek olarak geçmişten günümüze büyük önem taşımıştır. 18. yüzyıl ve sonrasında Johann David Passavant, Giovanni Morelli, Bernard Berenson, Max Jakob Friedländer ve Maurits Michiel van Dantzig gibi önemli figürlerin, sanat eserlerinin stilistik değerlendirmeleri ve özgünlük tespitleri üzerine yaptığı çalışmalar sanat uzmanlığının gelişimine önemli katkılar sağlamıştır. Passavant’ın eski ustaların eserlerine yönelik yaptığı katalog çalışmaları, Morelli'nin sanat eserlerini incelerken detaylara odaklanan Morellian Metodu, Berenson'un Morellian Metodu’nu geliştiren stilistik değerlendirmeleri, Friedländer'in stilistik değerlendirmelerle birlikte bilimsel analiz yöntemlerinin gerekliğini savunan düşünceleri ve Dantzig'in objektif kriterler oluşturan piktoloji yaklaşımları sanat uzmanlığının temel taşlarını oluşturmuştur. Teknolojinin gelişimi ve sanat eserlerinin özgünlük tespitlerinde bilimsel analiz yöntemlerinin kullanımının yaygınlaşması, sanat uzmanlığını disiplinler arası bir yaklaşıma evriltmiştir. Sanat eserlerinin incelenmesinde çeşitli analiz yöntemleriyle sanatçıların kullandıkları pigment ve bağlayıcıların içeriklerinin belirlenmesi, organik malzemelerin yaşının belirlenmesi ve malzemelerin yapısal özelliklerinin incelenmesi daha kesin sonuçlar elde edilmesini sağlamıştır. Bu makale, sanat uzmanlığının evrimini, Johann David Passavant’tan günümüze kadar nasıl geliştiğini, sanat uzmanlarının eserleri değerlendirirken kullandıkları stilistik değerlendirmeleri, analitik yöntemleri ve disiplinler arası yaklaşımları incelemektedir. Ayrıca Türkiye’de sanat uzmanlığının mevcut durumunu değerlendirerek bu alandaki gelişmeler ve uygulamalar ele alınmaktadır. Sanat uzmanlarının çalışma yöntemlerinin tarihsel süreç içindeki dönüşümü ve modern teknolojilerin bu mesleğe katkıları, sanat eserlerinin kesin sonuçlarla değerlendirilmesi açısından önemlidir.
