K-12 EFL Teachers’ Perceptions of Emergency Online Teaching: Challenges, Skill-Specific Effects, and Implications for Practice

Abstract

Developments in technology affect all aspects of human life. Foreign language education is no exception in that educational technologies are likely to help students and teachers handle possible challenges of studying languages in a foreign language context. The present study investigated teachers’ perceptions of online education based on their hands-on experiences in teaching English as a foreign language. This study used a questionnaire and focus-group interviews for data collection. The study revealed interesting findings about teachers’ attitudes towards online foreign language education. Moreover, the study shed light on benefits and deficiencies of online teaching and its impact on overall foreign language development. Finally, the study yielded a number of suggestions about how prospective uses of online foreign language education could be implemented more effectively.
