Characteristics of Teacher Educators from Pre-Service Classroom Teachers’ Perspectives

Abstract

This study aims to determine characteristics teacher educators, who are training classroom teachers in faculties of education, have already had and are expected to have. The group interview technique was used in this qualitative study. Criterion sampling as one of purposive sampling methods was employed. Participants of this study consisted of 8 pre-service classroom teachers (2 frehmen, 2 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 2 seniors) studying in the 2011-12 academic year in the Department of Primary Education, Faculty of Education, Afyon Kocatepe University, Afyonkarahisar, Turkey. A semi-structured interview schedule comprising 6 open-ended questions was used to collect the data which were then content analyzed. Findings were discussed under the following themes: (1) characteristics teacher educators have already had, (2) characteristics teacher educators are expected to have, (3) teacher educators’ ways of communication, (4) teacher educators in teaching-learning processes, (5) evaluation of teacher educators, and (6) problems and solutions provided.
