Turkish Adaptation of the Mathematical Processing Instrument and Pre-service Teachers’ Problem Solving Preferences

Abstract

This present study aimed to adapt the Mathematical Processing Instrument (MPI) developed by Suwarsono (1982) to Turkish and determine elementary pre-service teachers’ problem solving preferences. Results of the study revealed that the MPI is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used to measure students’ preference for visual or analytic problem solving strategies. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated as 0.72 and 0.78 for the Mathematical Processing Instrument-Tests I and II, respectively. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the overall instrument was found as 0.86. The difficulty of tasks and grade level had a significant impact on pre-service teachers’ problem solving preferences
