The Effect of Curriculum Development Course on Preservice Teachers' Cognitive Awareness of Curriculum Development

Abstract

The general purpose of this study is to analyze changes in pre-service taechers’ cognitive awareness levels of curriculum development who have taken curriculum development course. This study had a control group pre-test – post-test design. The study was carried out in the Department of Pre-school Teaching at Mevlana University in the first term of the 2012-2013 academic year. The sample consisted of a total of 67 sophomore preservice teachers. Data were collected through the “Cognitive Awareness of Curriculum Development Scale” developed by the researcher. The scale is composed of eight factors and 101 items. Moreover, its Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated as ,980. Paired- and independent-samples t tests were employed to determine whether preservice teachers’ pre-test and post-test scores do differ significantly or not. Moreover, effect size (effect range=eta square= η2) correlation coefficients were calculated. As a result, it was found out that cognitive awareness levels of pre-service teachers are higher after curriculum development course
