The Teachers of the Future within the Framework of Educational Philosophies: A Metaphoric Study

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine the future teachers’ thoughts about what kind of a teacher they want to be in the future via metaphors. In this direction, it is wanted 230 pre-service teachers who study in Dicle University Ziya Gökalp Faculty of Education in 2011-2012 academic year to complete the sentences of “I want to be a teacher like …….. Because………”. The data obtained from this study were analyzed by using qualitative and quantitative research methods. According to results of this study, participants produced 193 valid metaphors about teacher concept that they want to be in the future. These metaphors collected under four categories which are progressive teachers of the future, reconstructivist teachers of the future, perennial teachers of the future and essentialist teachers of the future in terms of common characteristics of metaphors. According to results obtained from this study, pre-service teachers mostly adopt progressivism educational philosophy and they adopt essentialist educational philosophy at the lowest rate

Eğitim Felsefeleri Çerçevesinde Geleceğin Öğretmenleri: Metaforik Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, öğretmen adaylarının gelecekte nasıl bir öğretmen olacaklarıyla ilgili düşüncelerini metaforlar aracılığıyla incelemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, 2011-2012 öğretim yılında, Dicle Üniversitesi Ziya Gökalp Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören 230 öğretmen adayından; “Gelecekte… gibi bir öğretmen olmak istiyorum. Çünkü...” cümlelerini tamamlamaları istenmiştir. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler, nitel ve nicel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre, katılımcılar gelecekte olmak istedikleri öğretmen kavramına ilişkin 193 geçerli metafor üretmiştir. Bu metaforlar ortak özellikleri bakımından geleceğin ilerlemeci öğretmenleri, geleceğin yeniden kurmacı öğretmenleri, geleceğin daimici öğretmenleri ve geleceğin esasici öğretmenleri olmak üzere dört kategori altında toplanmıştır. Bu çalışmada elde edilen sonuçlara göre öğretmen adayları geleceğe yönelik olarak en çok ilerlemeci, en az daimici eğitim felsefelerini benimsemektedir.
