Bibliometric Analysis of Publications on Working Conditions of Seafarers

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 7, 16 - 37, 30.06.2025

Öz

Seafaring is regarded as one of the high-risk occupational groups. The safety and health risks encountered during the execution of this profession, which are closely linked to working conditions, constitute a significant source of concern for both shipowners and seafarers. The primary aim of this study is to reveal the structural characteristics of the academic literature concerning the working conditions of seafarers. In this context, a total of 97 academic publications indexed in the Web of Science database were analyzed using bibliometric analysis methods. The findings obtained from the analysis indicate that the issue of seafarers’ working conditions should be addressed not only in terms of physical risks but also within the framework of psychological and social dimensions. Furthermore, the existing body of literature appears to be quantitatively limited, highlighting the need to foster greater academic interest in the working conditions of seafarers.
