The Examination of the Single Parenting Experiences of Household-Responsible Single Fathers

Abstract

In today’s late-modern society, families consisting of single fathers and their children are becoming increasingly common, representing a family type that is relatively less studied in social sciences compared to single mothers. This research aims to understand the experi-ences of single fathers in the Bitlis province, who have taken on the responsibility of head-ing their households for various reasons (such as the death of a spouse, divorce, or aban-donment). The study involved in-depth interviews with 12 single fathers using a semi-structured interview technique, and the data collected were analyzed using a phenomeno-logical approach. The analysis highlighted themes such as the reasons for becoming a sin-gle father and emotional reflections, challenges faced and coping methods, responsibilities as heads of the household, and the environmental support received. Additionally, changes in social relationships and feelings of exclusion, the strengthening of father-child bonds, and thoughts on remarriage emerged as other significant themes. Single fathers strive to meet their children's needs and build deep connections with them, managing various chal-lenges despite social norms and limited support, demonstrating considerable resilience. The findings indicate that single fathers require more support in areas such as psychological services, economic aid, educational resources, and flexible working hours.

Hanehalkı Sorumlusu Bekâr Babaların Tek Ebeveynlik Deneyimlerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Günümüz geç modern toplumunda görülme oranı giderek artan bekâr baba ve çocuklar-dan oluşan aile yapıları, sosyal bilimlerde yalnız annelere kıyasla görece daha az incelen-miş bir aile tipini temsil etmektedir. Bu araştırma, Bitlis ilinde yaşayan, çeşitli sebeplerle (eşin ölümü, boşanma veya terk edilme) bekâr baba olarak hanehalkı sorumluluğunu üstlenen babaların deneyimlerini anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniğiyle 12 bekâr baba ile derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleşti-rilmiş ve elde edilen veriler fenomenolojik bir yaklaşımla analiz edilmiştir. Görüşme anali-zinde; bekâr baba olma sürecine dair nedenler ve duygusal yansımalar, karşılaşılan zor-luklar ve mücadele yöntemleri, hanehalkı sorumlusu olarak üstlenilen görevler ve çevre desteği gibi temalar öne çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, sosyal ilişkilerdeki değişimler ve dışlanmışlık hisleri, baba-çocuk ilişkilerinin güçlenmesi ve yeniden evlenme konusundaki düşünceler de dikkat çeken diğer temalar arasında yer almıştır. Bekâr babalar, çocuklarının ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak ve onlarla derin bağlar kurmak adına sosyal normlara rağmen zorluklarla başa çıkmakta ve destek eksikliğine rağmen güçlü bir dayanıklılık sergilemektedir. Araştırma-nın bulguları, bekâr babaların psikolojik destek, ekonomik yardımlar, eğitim desteği ve esnek çalışma saatleri gibi alanlarda daha fazla desteğe ihtiyaç duyduğunu ortaya koy-maktadır.
