Women in Turkish Management Tradition and Tansu Çiller as a Modern Woman Leader Profile
Abstract
Throughout history, Turks have accorded women the importance they deserve in social and public life. Although practices such as polygamy and confining women to the home, which are often attributed to Islam but are thought to have originated from Arab and Iranian cultures, were initially adopted following the Turks' introduction to Islam, they were eventually abandoned over time. The granting of the right to vote and stand for election to women, ahead of many Western countries, particularly with the establishment of the Republic, demonstrates the importance that Turkish society attaches to women. Tansu Çiller, the first female Prime Minister of modern times, left a significant mark on Turkish political life by exercising the right to vote, stand for election, and participate in government that the Republic opened up for women. This study generally examines women in Turkish administrative history and subsequently provides information about Tansu Çiller, an important female figure of the modern era. Turkish and foreign sources, as well as reports prepared on the subject, were referenced to establish the framework of the study. The study is considered important as it addresses the place of women in society, a significant issue in every era, and is expected to contribute to the field.
