Interpreting Mamluk Prosperous Urban Identity Through Henri Lefebvre’s Theory of Spatial Architectonics

Abstract

This article analyzes the urbanization practices, economic organization, and modes of political representation of the Mamluk Sultanate through the lens of urban space. Mamluk cities-particularly Cairo and Damascus-present a complex urban ecosystem shaped by the interaction of public squares, production areas, trade networks, industrial facilities, and military architecture. Cairo and Damascus served as major hubs of both regional and long-distance trade, and these commercial networks influenced not only urban wealth but also the transformation of social structures.This urban model-shaped by military, economic, and cultural policies-positioned Mamluk cities among the leading urban centers of the medieval Islamic world. Within this framework, the article approaches Mamluk cities not merely through their physical fabric, but also through production relations, political discourse, cultural practices, and forms of social organization, thereby demonstrating how urban space was closely linked to state ideology and the economic system.

Henri Lefebvre’nin Mekânsal Arkitektonik Teorisiyle Memlûk Müreffeh Şehir Kimliğinin Okunması

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Memlûk Sultanlığı’nın kentleşme pratiğini, ekonomik yapılanmasını ve siyasal temsil biçimlerini Henri Lefebvre’nin mekânın üretimi kuramının bir uzantısı olan mekânsal arkitektonik yaklaşımı çerçevesinde incelemektedir. Lefebvre’ye göre mekân, yalnızca fiziksel bir zemin değil; toplumsal ilişkiler, iktidar pratikleri ve ekonomik süreçler aracılığıyla sürekli olarak üretilen tarihsel bir olgudur. Bu doğrultuda Memlûk şehirleri, özellikle Kahire ve Şam, üretim, ticaret, dolaşım üzerinden mekânsal pratikler, iktidarın planladığı ve düzenlediği mekânlar ve yaşanan mekânlar arasındaki etkileşim üzerinden ele alınmaktadır. Meydanlar, kaleler, surlar, kervansaraylar ve anıtsal yapılar, sultanlık iktidarının mekânsal düzlemde görünür kılındığı sembolik ve işlevsel unsurlar olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Üretim ekonomisinin Nil’in mevsimsel döngüsüne bağlı tarımsal faaliyetler üzerine kurulması ve ikta sisteminin vergi gelirlerini merkezîleştirerek askerî sınıfın finansmanını sağlaması ise, kentsel mekânın ekonomik ilişkiler doğrultusunda örgütlendiğini göstermektedir. Şam ve Kahire’nin bölgesel ve uzun mesafeli ticaret ağlarının kavşak noktaları olarak işlev görmesi, Lefebvre’nin mekânsal pratikler kavramı çerçevesinde, ticaretin kent mekânını yeniden biçimlendiren dinamik bir unsur olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu ticarî ağlar yalnızca ekonomik refahı artırmakla kalmamış, aynı zamanda toplumsal tabakalaşmayı, kentsel hiyerarşiyi ve kültürel etkileşimi de dönüştürmüştür.
