Abstract

The Examination of Goal Time According to League Ranking in Turkish Super League 2020-2021 Football Season

Year 2022, , 226 - 240, 28.06.2022

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the time of goals scored and conceded in the Turkish Super League 2020-2021 football season according to the league ranking. The study was done on 21 teams competing in the Turkish Super League in the 2020-2021 football season. 21 teams were examined in three categories as 1-7 (n=7), 8-14 (n=7) and 15-21 (n=7) ranks according to their league rankings. The duration of the competition was divided into 8 time zones as 0-15, 16-30, 31-45, 0-45, 46-60, 61-75, 76-90 and 46-90 minutes. The number of goals scored and conceded by the teams in different time periods of the matches was determined. Goal time data were examined in three parts as home, away and all of the league. The difference between the ranking groups of the goal time data of the matches was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). According to findings of study, it was determined that the teams between 1-7 rank scored more goals than the teams between 15-21 rank in the second half (in 46-90 min. interval) of the matches in away and whole league and in the first half (in 0-45 min. interval) of the home matches (p<0.05). However, it was found that the teams between 1-7 rank conceded fewer goals than the teams between 15-21 rank in the second half of matches in the all of league, home and away (p<0.05). Consequently, it might be said that in the 2020-2021 season of the Super League, the top-ranked teams differed from the lower-ranked teams by their effective attack and defense performances in the second half of the matches according to goal time analysis.
