Abstract

Plastics have become favorite materials in manufacturing of orthosis compared to conventional materials today due to their distinctions such as being durable, light, hygienic and easily machinable. Plastics are organic polymeric materials that can be shaped by heat, pressure, mechanical and chemical methods. They are classified as homopolymers and copolymers structurally. They are manufactured through addition and condensation polymerization. Plastics obtained through addition polymerization are thermoplastics, and plastics obtained through condensation polymerization are thermoset plastics. Plastics exist in two physical states structurally, being amorphous and semi-crystalline/crystalline. Most of orthotic polymers have amorphous and crystalline regions together in their networks. Fully crystalline polymers are rigid; they do not show glass transition when they are heated and they melt at a certain temperature. The most important plastics belonging to polyolefin family which are most widely used in manufacturing of orthosis are polyethylene high-density (PEHD), polyethylene low-density (PELD) and polypropylenes having isotactic, atactic and syndiotactic molecular chains. Although fatigue in plastics arises from many different factors, it is generally in the form of mechanical and chemical (oxidative) degradation in orthotic plastics, and the degradation occurs due to machining, working and environmental effects. Plastic orthoses must not deform after they are manufactured, and cracks and linear cracks must be avoided during manufacturing and use. High-period oscillations must be prevented by sizing plastic orthoses with a thickness and type suitable for loading, shape stability must be ensured in the design of plastic orthoses and measures must be taken against adverse environmental factors
