Humor is as important in the school environment as it is in daily life, due to its effects such as resolving conflicts in the school environment, creating a positive climate and facilitating communication between people. Humor has positive effects such as making people happy, laughing and cheering; destructive effects such as hurt, exclusion, and loneliness can also be observed. The effect of humor in schools is also related to the humor styles of the students.
In this study, it is aimed to examine the humor styles of the gifted secondary school students studying at BİLSEM according to some variables and to compare the humor styles between the gifted students and the students with normal development.
The research was prepared in accordance with the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 96 secondary school students, 53 girls and 43 boys, aged 11 to 14, selected from the city center of Antalya, using easily accessible case sampling. “Personal Information Form” and “Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ)” were used to collect the data. In the analysis of the data, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (One Way ANOVA), Post Hoc Schefee test and SPSS 22.0 software were used.
According to the findings of the research; It was seen that students preferred positive humor styles more than negative humor styles. When the effect of gender on humor styles is examined, no significant difference is observed. In the Personality Enhancer Humor dimension, it was observed that gifted students had a higher statistical value than the students with normal development, while the statistical point value of the students with normal development was found to be higher in the Aggressive Humor and Destructive Humor dimensions.
