Abstract
Our values can change at any time in our life. However, the most critical period is early childhood. In early childhood, fairy tales are so important for values education as well as parents’ modelling and counseling. Brothers Grimm fairy tales are the most famous fairy tales around the world. So, millions of children are introduced to values by Grimm fairy tales. That’s why it is so important to investigate Brothers Grimm tales in terms of values. The aim of this study is to find out which values there are in Grimm Brothers tales and what the frequency is. Toward this goal, qualitative research method was used. Data was collected by using document analysis method. 51 Brothers Grimm tales were analyzed. 341 moral values (such as love, helping, affection, friendship, etc.) and 469 negative elements (such as violence, alcohol, smoking, lying, insulting, etc.) found in Grimm Brother's fairy tales. The most frequent values were love, helpfulness, compassion, benevolence, friendship, loyalty, fairness, courage, kindness, and honesty respectively. The least frequent values were patience, devotion, self-control, fidelity, humility, tolerance, generosity, responsibility, respect, diligence, cooperation respectively. The most frequent negative elements were violence, bad habits (using alcohol and smoking), lying, malice, fraudulency, insulting, greed, robbery, self-seeking, revenge, and arrogance respectively. The least frequent negative elements were impatience, hatred, suicide, stinginess, and jealousy respectively.
