Hırka-i Şerif Camii ilk defa XVIII. yüzyılda Hz. Peygamber’in Veysel
Karanî’ye (Üveys-el Karanî) emanet ettiği hırkanın (Hırka-i Şerif) muhafazası ve
ziyareti için inşa edilmiştir. 1847 yılında harap olan cami Sultan Abdülmecit’in
isteği üzerine dönemin Ebniye Müdürü Seyyid Abdülhalim Efendi tarafından
1848-1851 yılları arasında yenilenmiştir. Hem ziyeretgah hem ibadethane olarak
tasarlanan yeni cami; sekizgen planlı harim, harime kıble istikametinden bitişik
hırka dairesi ve kuzey yönden alt katı son cemaat yeri, üst katı hünkâr dairesinden
meydana gelen kâgir bir yapıdır. Hırka-i Şerif dairesi ile hünkâr dairesi arasındaki
bağlantı harimi iki yandan kuşatan iki katlı ziyaret galerileri ile sağlanmıştır. Bu
çalışmada Hırka-i Şerif Camii’nin 1847 yılından sonraki inşa süreci ele
alınmıştır. Bu çerçevede keşif ve inşa defterleri ayrıntılı biçimde incelenerek
inşatta kullanılan malzemeler ve maliyetleri, işçilere ödenen ücretler, inşaatın
ilerleme süreci ve yapının geçirdiği onarımlara ilişkin değerlendirmeler
yapılmıştır.
