Abstract

Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the drug utilization status of pregnant women and the drug utilization and drug safety information during pregnancy.
Methods: The sample of the cross-sectional and descriptive study consisted of 378 pregnant women who were calculated as a result of power analysis and who met the research criteria. The data were collected with a 19-item questionnaire which was created by the researcher by literature review. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 15.0 package program. In order to conduct the research, both the approval of the institution and the ethics committee were obtained.
Results: It was determined that the average age of the pregnant women in the research sample was 28.43±5.47 years, 52.4% of them were living in the district and 42.9% of them had secondary education. It was found that 90.2% of the pregnant women was on medication during pregnancy and 77.8% of them took vitamins/mineral drugs and 4% of them used drugs other than the doctor's recommendation. It was determined that 75.4% of the pregnant women received information about the drug utilization, 44.4% of them informed by the physician, 16.7% of them informed by the midwife/nurse and 12.7% of them received information from the internet.
Conclusion: In the study, it was found that the rate of drug utilization during pregnancy was very high (90.2%), and most pregnant women use vitamins and minerals drugs (96.4% doctor’s recommendation), the information about the drug utilization was reached commonly from the physician in pregnancy, and as internet source, they used the websites which are not safe and does not contain scientific data.
