The Impact of Foreign Trade on Employment: Panel Data Analysis on OECD Countries

Abstract

One of the main problems of both many developed and developing countries is unemployment. Countries which are applying policies to increase employment, based on the assumption that foreign trade increases employment in theory, engage in various foreign trade activities and expect an increase in their employment. This study researches whether foreign trade affect employment for 20 OECD countries. The analysis was done for the years 1980-2018. CCEMG estimator was used to reveal the long-term relationship between variables, Emirmahmutoğlu and Köse (2011) causality test was used for the short-term relationship as well. According to the test results, while no significant relationship was found between the export and the square of exports and employment in the entire panel in the long run, a significant and positive relationship was found between imports, fixed capital and employment.

Dış Ticaretin İstihdama Etkisi: OECD Ülkeleri Üzerine Panel Veri Analizi

Abstract

Hem gelişmiş hem de gelişmekte olan birçok ülkenin en temel problemlerinden birisi işsizliktir. İstihdamı artırmak amacıyla çeşitli politikalar uygulayan ülkeler, teoride kabul gören dış ticaretin istihdamı artırdığı yönündeki varsayımdan hareketle çeşitli dış ticaret faaliyetlerinde bulunur ve istihdamının artması yönünde bir beklenti içine girerler. Bu çalışma dış ticaretin istihdamı etkileyip etkilemediğini 20 OECD ülkesi için araştırmaktadır. Analiz, 1980-2018 yılları için gerçekleştirilmiştir. Dış ticaret ve istihdam arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek amacıyla panel veri analizi yapılmıştır. Değişkenler arasındaki uzun dönemli ilişkiyi ortaya koymak için CCEMG tahmincisi, kısa dönem ilişki için ise Emirmahmutoğlu ve Köse (2011) nedensellik testi kullanılmıştır. Test sonuçlarına göre uzun dönemde panelin tümünde ihracat ve ihracatın karesi ile istihdam arasında anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilemezken, ithalat ve sabit sermaye ile istihdam arasında anlamlı ve pozitif bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir.
