Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the reasons why individuals interested in mountaineering sport prefer mountaineering as a leisure (recreation), the contribution of mountaineering sports to their personal development and its effect on their professional and personal lives; and whether mountaineering sport has a relationship with the life satisfaction of individuals. For this purpose, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 participants who are members of a mountaineering club operating in Izmir. As a result of the interviews, the purposes of participation in mountaineering activities include spending time in nature, doing sports, socializing, risk, adventure, excitement, happiness, struggle, adrenaline and the like. It has been determined that mountaineering sport has an important place in the lives of individuals and contributes to discovery, socialization, listening to oneself and spiritual renewal. These aims provide peace and happiness to those who are engaged in mountaineering sports and have a positive effect on the life satisfaction of individuals. As a result, it has been observed that there is a positive relationship between individuals' participation in mountaineering activities and their life satisfaction.
