Deer Cult In Eskiyapar

Abstract

Eskiyapar Höyük, located in the Central North Anatolian Geographical region, maintains its archaeological importance in the region at all times. The 3rd Period excavations carried out in 2010-2021 yielded complementary results supporting the stratigraphic and chronological searches in the region. The step trench “A”, which was formed in the north-south direction on the northern slope of the mound in 2010, turned into an excavation area where 7 different architectural levels were exhibited in the following years. The most important scientific data that Eskiyapar has provided to the archeology of the region undoubtedly the ability to clearly define the Old Hittite and Middle Hittite phases, both archaeologically and architecturally. In general, the city of Eskiyapar opens a complementary and supportive archaeological door to the Hatti and Hittite Periods in the Central North Anatolian Geography in religion, administrative, economic and cultural aspects. In Eskiyapar Old Hittite Relie vases, the cult of Deer God (Tutelary God of the Fields), Storm God and Mother Goddess came to the fore. one of the structures of the Eskiyapar Hittite city maybe related to a local Goddess. Since the Paleolithic Age, the deer has always preserved its place as an important element of the Anatolian art of depiction and the cult world. Archaeological data show that deer have an important place in rituals as well as in people’s nutritional needs for thousands of years. In this context, Eskiyapar deer descriptions will be examined and the development and prevalence of this cult especially in the Old Hittite Period, will be evaluationed.
