On Determining the Qur’anic Suras as Meccan or Medinan: Sūrat al-Ḥajj as a Case Study

Abstract

Study This article contains two discussions. The first one is to determine whether or not the features of Meccan and Medinan suras presented in the classical ulūm al-Qurān sources are general descriptions. The second one is to examine which source is more decisive in determining the revelation period of a sura (i.e. Meccan or Medinan): is it the stylistic features and the content of the suras or the riwāyas about the historical contexts of verses? This article tackles these two issues by analyzing the sūrat al-Ḥajj as a case in point. To that end, I compare 14 classical sources in ulūm al-Qurān with a view to finding out the course of development of the feature of the suras over the years in a comparative fashion and to see what this amount to for the sūrat al-Ḥajj. After analyzing the stylistic features and the riwāyas pertaining to the historical contexts of the verses, I basically conclude that the riwāyas are more decisive in determining its revelation period and that sūrat al-Ḥajj is Medinan

Surelerin Mekkīliği ve Medenīliği: 22/el-Ḥacc Suresi Örneği

Abstract

Ulūmu’l-Ḳurān konulu kaynaklarda Kur’an surelerinin özellikleri hakkında bilgiler bulunmaktadır. Müfessirler arasında ihtilaf konusu olan bu özelliklerin genel nitelikler olup olmadığının belirlenmesi bu çalışmanın ilk tartışma konusunu oluşturmaktadır. İkinci tartışma konusu, surelerin nuzûl dönemini belirlemede üslup ve içerik özellikleri mi yoksa ayetlerin tarihî bağlamına dair rivayetlerin mi belirleyici olduğudur. Bu makale söz konusu iki hususu, nuzûl dönemi ihtilaflı olan 22/el-Ḥacc suresi özelinde ele almakta ve tahlil etmektedir. Bu kapsamda önce on dört temel ulūmu’l-Ḳurān kaynağında surelerin özelliklerine dair bilgilerin nasıl bir tarihsel gelişim gösterdikleri mukayeseli olarak incelenmiş ve bunların ilgili sure bağlamındaki karşılıkları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Daha sonra da aynı surenin tarihsel bağlamına ışık tutan rivayetler üzerinden bunların geçerliliği sorgulanmıştır. Çalışmada, surelerin nuzûl dönemlerinin tespitinde belirleyici kaynağın, ayetlerin tarihî bağlamına dair rivayetler olduğu tesbit edilmekte ve gerek ‘üslup ve içerik’ eksenli gerek ‘rivayet’ eksenli yapılan inceleme sonucunda, el-Ḥacc suresinin nuzûl şartlarının Medine olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmaktadır.
